“What better way
to showcase Namibian arts and crafts, then by
exhibiting it in an accommodation establishment?”
– Prof. Aldo Behrens, Co-ordinator:
Bank
Windhoek Arts Festival.
In response to the launch-initiative of the guesthouse art gallery idea,
Prof. Behrens applauded this initiative and during February 2007, Guesthouse
Terra Africa became the first Namibian guest house to continually host Namibian
and African art as part of the permanent décor, as well as regular art
exhibitions and sales, in an effort to create a new platform for art in the country.
Exhibited throughout the Terra Africa House
are art pieces from Namibia, South Africa, Uganda,
Mozambique, Ethiopia, Egypt and Nigeria. Two
paintings, a gift from Germany by guest & artist
Ramona Faltin, are proudly displayed in our foyer.
Gracing us with her presence is a Sergiev Possad-style
Matryoshka Doll – a gift by Michael & Larisa
Lyakhova from Moscow, Russia, during their two
week stay with us.
Be on the lookout for works by permanent exhibiting
artist, Helena Brandt, who is well-known in local
and international art circles. Helena boasts
a testimonial of successful local and international
exhibitions spanning over 30 years. She has been
lecturer at various prominent fine arts academies
across the globe and has played an active role
in the development of fine arts in Namibia.
Kizito Maria Kasule (dr.) of Uganda is a graduate
of his local Makerere University, and has been
professionally involved in the fine arts since
obtaining his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in
1993. In 2003 he obtained a PhD in Fine Arts
and ever since he has dedicated himself to the
development of the arts in Uganda. Art pieces
by Kasule have made their home in Germany, Kenya,
Canada, Kampala, South Africa, Entebbe, Denmark
and recently Namibia, in the Terra Africa House.
Purchasable art pieces are clearly labelled
and placed throughout the guest house in our
guest rooms, lounge, dinning room, corridors
and even in the gardens surrounding the guest
house. Per visit, guests can look forward to
no less than 40 original masterpieces in formats
such as paintings, crafts and jewellery, to remember
their visit to Namibia and in particular, Guesthouse
Terra Africa.
